The Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle went through two major periods of coining during its history. From its introduction in 1907 to the eve of America’s involvement in World War I in 1916, the US Mint issued the coins annually. As the demand for gold sunk in Europe and merchants paid American companies for war goods, a flood of Gold Double Eagles came into the US and the mint ceased producing new coins. In 1920, with demand for American Gold Double Eagles rising in Europe as a form of stable currency, the US Mint resumed coining. Most of the coins struck from 1920 to 1933 ended up in banks or overseas.

All of these 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with this grade have an attractive, high-quality luster remaining and have very few detracting flaws. These flaws include either a few small contact marks or one-to-two larger marks. There are also one or two small hairlines visible. Please keep in mind we cannot guarantee whether you receive a PCGS or NGC-graded coin, and that buying multiples can result in receiving coins with all PCGS, all NGC, or a mixture of labels.

In 1927, the US Mint struck just under 3 million coins for the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle. Most of the surviving 1927 specimens grade at Mint State 63 or lower due to poor storage and handling over nearly a century of time since striking. Finding an MS65 specimen is very difficult.

On the obverse of 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles is a depiction of Lady Liberty. Saint-Gaudens’ design shows Liberty walking toward the viewer with a large torch in her right hand to light the way and an olive branch in her left hand. The US Capitol Building is visible behind Liberty in the design.

The reverse side of 1927 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles features a soaring American bald eagle. The bird is shown here gliding through the air with its massive wings swooped out to its sides as the sun rises along the bottom of the coin and its rays stretch to the edges of the design.
