This figure is shown with a feathered headdress and is struck incuse on the field of the coin, a facet it shares with the incuse strike of the eagle on the reverse.

In the reverse field of 1909-S $5 Gold Half Eagles, the American bald eagle is captured in left-profile relief. The eagle is shown with its wings resting at its side as it sits perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch around the sheaf.
