The obverse of each denomination in the 2005-W American Gold Eagle set features a walking Lady Liberty. Created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this design depicts a full-length figure of Lady Liberty walking towards you. Her hair is flowing, and in her outstretched arms, she has a torch in her right and an olive branch in her left. This design was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904 to make our US coins more like ancient Greek and Roman coins.

The reverse of each denomination in the 2005-W American Gold Eagle set features a male bald eagle, with an olive branch in its talons, flying towards a nest with a female eagle and a couple of eaglets. This design was created by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. The weight and denomination of each coin is included, in addition to several other inscriptions.

In this 4-coin set, there is one each of the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights of the 2005-W American Gold Eagle coins. Only Proof coins are offered in 4-coin sets by the US Mint. The Mint initially issued only the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle in 1986, adding the 1/2 oz Proof in 1987 and the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Proofs in 1988.

Each American Gold Eagle coin is composed of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. These coins bear a W mint mark on the obverse, indicating they were struck at the West Point Mint. The coins also come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
