Each year brings a fresh Somalia Elephant release, with 2023 marking the 20^th design for the acclaimed series. While the Somalia Elephant did not officially enter production until 2004, The Bavarian State Mint began minting this classic coin as far back as 1999, when it was issued by Zambia. The coin is part of the beloved African Wildlife Series, which also includes an annual leopard design.

The Somalia coat of arms is found on the obverse of each coin in the 2023 Gold Elephant First Struck 6-Coin Collection. In this national design, we see two cheetahs supporting a shield decorated with a star. Beneath the shield, two spears cross along with a pair of palm leaves. Inscriptions of the identifying hallmarks are also on each coin.

An African bush elephant features on the reverse of the coins in these 2023 Somalia Gold Elephant 6-Coin Collections. The elephant is in right-profile relief with its trunk wrapped around a branch in order to secure leaves for a meal. This close-up image is beautifully contrasted with an African savanna backdrop.
