From the 1979 introduction of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf until the end of the 2023 production cycle for these bullion coins, only one monarch has ever featured on the obverse: Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. With the Late Queen’s passing in 2022, it was only a matter of time before not only a new obverse design would be created, but also just a matter of time before the series featured a new monarch for the first time ever.
His Majesty King Charles III is featured in left-profile relief on the obverse of 2024 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. This design follows the coining traditions of Commonwealth coinage. His Majesty is shown in the opposing orientation of his successor, and mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Like his mother, King Charles III is also depicted without a crown.
The sugar maple leaf remains a constant on the reverse of 2024 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leafs. This 1979 design from Walter Ott has graced the reverse of all coins in this series since the debut of the gold coins.
