The $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle was struck by the US Mint from 1850 to 1907 and was the largest gold coin produced during the time. Each $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle was struck in the United States using 90.0% gold and contained a total of .9675 troy ounces. After the California gold rush of 1849, the US Mint wanted to put all of its excess gold to use, and that same year congress authorized the production of a $20 gold piece. In 1850, the $20 Liberty Gold Eagle was designed by a famous Chief Engraver for the US Mint. Though the production of these coins was halted in 1907 when it was replaced by the $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, it is still immensely popular amongst collectors today.

On the obverse of the Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is a left facing portrait of Lady Liberty. She is surrounded by a total of 13 stars with the minting year etched below her. The coin’s reverse design features an eagle at the center with a shield in front of its stomach. In opposing talons it holds both an olive branch and several arrows, while directly above it is the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Circling above the bird the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are etched, while below is the coin’s legal tender value.

Though these coins stopped being minted over 100 years ago, they are still available today.
